Coach Joe Carr, Sr. comes from a family that is known throughout the country for wrestling, the only family in NCAA history to have five brothers – Fletcher, Jimmy, Joe, Nate and Michael - who became All-Americans. Joe wrestled for the University of Kentucky and was a 3-time SEC Champion. Joe became was the University of Kentucky’s first wrestling All-American in 1975 when he finished in 3rd place. In the 1975 quarterfinals, he dropped a 5-4 decision to Penn State’s Jerry Villecco before rebounding to claim the bronze medal. The following year, in 1976, Carr lost in the semi-finals to eventual Champion Pat Christianson from Wisconsin, 12-10. In the consolation finals, Carr defeated Villecco, 13-5. Carr finished his Kentucky career with three consecutive undefeated dual meet seasons. Internationally, Carr was a Silver Medalist in the Pan-Am Games, won a pair of USA Wrestling National Championships, was a Junior World Silver Medalist and a USA Wrestling World Team alternate. Following his international wrestling career, Carr was named the assistant wrestling coach for the University of Kentucky. After leaving the Wildcat program, Carr began coaching at Woodford County High School. He served Woodford County for 30 years and won 14 State Championships! He coached 56 individual State Champions which is more than any other KHSAA coach. Under Coach Carr's leadership, the WCHS wrestling team championships’ span from 1972 to the most recent in 2006 where he coached 5 individual State Champions in that season alone.
